Miles Johnson and Leigh Grossman
MILES JOHNSON, Owner I am a true Seattle native (there are a few of us!) with grandparents and great-grandparents buried here. I attended the University of Washington (Go Dawgs! – please don’t hold it against me if you are Cougar and I won’t hold being a Cougar against you) earning degrees in Business Administration and Economics. I put my degrees to use as a buyer for various Seattle based retailers but longed for a career with fewer meetings. With the help of a career counselor, I narrowed in on what I was missing and that was creativity. Soon it became clear that owning a flower shop would be a good fit with my interests. After looking at options, I decided to purchase the best flower shop in Seattle, known at the time as Fiori Floral & Garden. It was an extreme leap of faith that has been rewarding on so many levels. Besides fulfilling my desire to be creative, I have had the opportunity to meet many wonderful people (some of whom I had only read about in newspapers), had my shop’s work featured in Vogue and other magazines, demonstrated floral design on a local TV station, and have taught hundreds of people the art of pavé floral design in classes in my studio. I view flowers as an expression of people’s emotions. It is an honor and a charge that I do not take lightly. I have loved flowers my whole life. When the peonies opened in the yard of my first home I was smitten. You will never find me in a bad mood during local peony season! My yard has been turned into a cutting garden for use in our creations with mint, andromeda, dozens of hydrangea bushes, hellebores and the most amazing lilac you have ever seen, all grown with love and a respect for the environment. I have been honored to serve on the Board of Directors for the Seattle Wholesale Grower’s Market, a co-operative of regional flower growers, as an Industry Representative, promoting the Slow Flowers movement and sustainable flowers. What really makes this business special are the people. When I bought Fiori Floral Design in 2003, the manager at the time was Leigh Grossman, a woman who has taught me so much when I knew so little and who I have grown to love and admire. Leigh and I are a true team in business and close friends outside of work. I call Leigh my “Gift with Purchase.” LEIGH GROSSMAN, Creative Director I have been in the floral industry since, well, let’s just say my entire adult life. I started working summers while in college making hand-tied bouquets for a Bay Area florist located next door to an enormous cemetery. I next worked at the renowned Podesta Baldocchi in San Francisco. Their Christmases were famous with lines a block long to get into the store to see their dazzling themed trees. Moving to Seattle was thrilling as a designer; it is a floral paradise here. There is an amazing variety of some of my favorite growing in my backyard: lilac, peonies, roses, wisteria, hydrangea, dahlias and on and on. Even after so many years, I still get excited about the flowers that cross our threshold at Fiori Floral Design. In fact, my dance to celebrate the season’s first bunch of Muscari is known city-wide. I come from a family that was centered around the Arts. Theater, museums and photography influenced my creativity, my eye for color and space and my sense of drama. By nature, I see the big picture and the small picture (a blessing and a curse), but for my role as Fiori’s Creative Director, it is this vision that provides our clientele with a floral, wedding or event that exceeds their expectations.About Fiori Floral Design
WELCOME!Fiori Floral Design began as Seattle's first studio florist in 1995. Our focus has always been on creating carefully curated luxury florals. Our work has been featured in Vogue, Romantic Homes, Seattle Bride, Seattle Homes & Lifestyles and other publications. We hire very talented artists to work here in a fun environment that encourages professional growth. Nearly a dozen of our former designers have gone on to open their own shops across the country and we are their biggest cheerleaders. We also offer classes in floral design that are fun no matter what your experience level is.
OUR SIGNATURE STYLE
We specialize in the French style of floral design called pavé, a jeweler's term for setting precious stones closely together so they appear to cover an entire surface. Floral artists use this technique as well, placing blooms closely together to create arrangements that are jewel boxes of flowers. Our flower choices are intentional without extraneous filler - every element is integral to an arrangement's beauty and structure.
We also offer our exclusive Texture Collection of arrangements. When we offered our first Texture Box in 2010 we had no idea they would become so enormously popular. The collection has grown to include three sizes of boxes and two styles arranged in bowls. They are a feast for the eyes with something new to see at every angle. Check them out in out online catalog.
ORCHID PLANTS
Our phalaenopsis orchid plants are legendary in Seattle both for the varieties that we offer as well as how long they last. We source our orchid plants from experienced growers in Walla Walla, Washington that we have come to know like family. We pot them up in premium containers and accent them with branches, mosses and textures for a look that is truly breathtaking. Every orchid that we deliver arrives with detailed care information so the recipient has all of the information that they need to make them last a long time.
FLORAL DESIGN CLASSES
When a client asked to have us host a flower arranging class for her and a group of her friends to celebrate her birthday in 2007 we said "That sounds like fun!" It was so much fun in fact that we were the first florist in Seattle to offer classes to the public, long before that became popular. We offer classes because we are passionate about what we do and love sharing techniques to help anyone of any skill level create Instagram worthy arrangements. Do you want your flowers to last longer? We are known for arrangements that last and last and teach step-by-step what we do to earn that reputations. Enrollment in each class is limited with most classes having no more that eight students so that we can give one-on-one attention.
A list of upcoming classes can be found on our Floral Design Classes page. We also offer private classes in floral design and making a succulent planters. More information about private classes can be found on our Classes Frequently Asked Questions page.
OUR URBAN FLOWER FARM
Just outside our studio doors you will find our little urban flower farm where we grown many of the flowers that we use. A pair of 50 year old lilac trees provide the most incredibly fragrant lilac you can find, some with bloom as big as a quarter! Each fall we plant over 1000 spring bulbs that have been curated to allow us to offer tulips, narcissus and Muscari in varieties that you will not see anywhere else. We grow many varieties of hellebores which have become some of our favorite flowers to design with. nearly fifty hydrangea bushes provide us with flowers in every color imaginable, including the incredible 'Pistachio' which has blooms that look like they are hand-painted. Our collection of dahlias allows us to offer varieties that can not be found in other shops. Typically we will harvest blooms the same day the arrangement is delivered making them the freshest and longest lasting flowers that you can have delivered.
WE CARE ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT
In addition to foliages and textural elements that we forage, we supplement what we grown from local flower farmers that we personally know and who emphasize sustainable growing practices. The later months of spring we feature peonies grown on a peony farm that has been in existence since the 1930's and in still operated by descendants of the founders. All year round we keep a curated selection of premium flowers on hand to supplement what we grow and arrange everything without extraneous filler to allow the beauty of each bloom to shine through. We are avid recyclers and composters and are the only Envirostars recognized florist in Washington state.
