Floral Design Class FAQ's

The class that I would like to register for has already filled up. Can you add just one more person?

The maximum number of students in our classes reflects the most people that we can comfortably fit into the studio and give personal attention to without the class going too late into the evening. However, we do have a wait list for any class that fills up. Just give us a call at (206) 329-3944 and we will be happy to add you. If anyone is unable to attend we will offer the space to people on the wait list before opening the space to the public.

Are students able to ask questions during class?

Yes! We want you to get as much as possible from the class so we encourage students to ask a lot of questions.

May I take pictures during the class?

Yes! In fact, we encourage it! This will allow you to have photographs to refer to when you recreate your arrangement at home. There will also be a photo studio set up so that you may take photographs of your work at the end of the evening.

Do I need to bring anything to class?

Everything that you need to create a beautiful arrangement is provided, including tools, an apron and notepaper. We do recommend that you bring your phone or a camera to document your work.

Do I need to have any experience arranging flowers in order to register?

Not at all. Our classes are open to everybody, whether your experience is limited to putting a market bouquet in a vase or you are already a professional in the industry looking to learn new skills. The classes are typically a mix of all levels of experience and are taught in a way that everyone will benefit, no matter what their skill level is.

Is the class suitable as training for a career as a floral designer?

Our classes can serve as piece of an overall education in floristry but preparing for a career in the industry is something that people will usually spend months studying at a certified school. Even upon graduation from a program in florists there is always more to learn. In fact, many professional florists have taken our classes as a part of their continuing education.

How long do the classes last?

Our classes in pavé floral design typically run three and one-half hours. The first 45 minutes are spent discussing tools and techniques to make your cut flowers last longer as well as design theory, followed by two hours of step-by-step instruction on creating your arrangement. The class finishes with some final tweaks to each student’s arrangement and a class photograph. Afterwards students are welcome to use the photo studio to take pictures of their arrangement before heading home.

The Texture Box classes usually run two and one-half hours. We dive right in showing how to prepare the container and discussing what elements we will be using before giving a demonstration on how to put your Texture Box together. Students assemble for a class photograph and are welcome to use the photo studio to take pictures of their arrangement.

Is the class suitable for children?

Sharp tools are used during the class so registration of students younger than 18 years of age is handled on a case-by-case basis. Please notify us if you would like to register a minor. We may want to meet them first to be sure that the class is appropriate.

What is the price to have a private class?

We create a custom class that is tailored to your desire and budget so there is not a standard price. Our minimum to reserve the studio and instructor for a weekday evening is $1000. A private class similar to our public classes which include a gift bag for each student is $150 per person with a $1000 minimum. We can also create a smaller arrangement and eliminate the gift bag to bring the cost per person down as long as the minimum is met

How many people can we have for a private class?

The studio can comfortably accommodate eight students for a floral design class and expand to include up ten, possibly twelve in a pinch. Beyond that it would be best to host a floral design class at another location. We have hosted a baby shower for sixteen people by utilizing both the studio and our cutting garden. For classes with more than eight people we will usually create a smaller arrangement and bring on an assistant so that the class runs smoothly and everyone receives personal attention.

What determines the price for a private class?

There are a number of factors that determine the pricing for a private class including:

  • Will the class be held in the studio or off-site? Having a private class at another location is more expensive due to the additional time required for travel, setup and take down.
  • The number of students. For floral design classes with more than eight students an assistant is usually required in order for the class to move along efficiently which is an additional expense.
  • The size of the arrangement the students will be making. We can often simplify the arrangement and make it smaller which will reduce the cost per student and allow more time for socializing.
  • The gift bag that we include in our public classes is optional and eliminating it can reduce the cost of a private class.
  • When the class is held. Classes during regular business hours or on weekends are charged a premium. Classes held on a weekday are more because the studio will not be able to fill orders during the class but we still need someone here to answer the phones so the class will not be interrupted. Weekend classes are more because the instructor will be giving up a portion of their weekend to teach.

What is your cancellation policy?

Registrations for public classes may be cancelled for a full refund or transferred to another class with no questions asked up to seven days prior by notifying us via phone or email. After that transfers and refunds will only be possible if we are able to fill the space because the flowers for the class will have been ordered. If the class is full we will often have a wait list that we can contact. Registrations may also be transferred to a friend or family member as long as you notify us at least four hours before the class begins. If we are unable to fill your place we will be happy to send you or someone you designate a floral arrangement that was made during the class for you to enjoy.

We regret that we are not able to offer cancellations on private classes once they are booked but we will endeavor to reschedule at a mutually agreed up on time if we are notified at least two weeks prior to the scheduled date of the class.
